Cell Dogs Graduations
Cell Dogs Graduation
This is an occasion where staff, adopters, and Cell Dogs team members, deans from Santiago Canyon College, and at times press or representatives of the court come together, and the program trainers and their group of dogs can “show off” their new skills.
Our Program Manager introduces our program, the trainers, and of course the pups. Each group of trainers demonstrates certain commands, and share their thoughts about their experiences. They get a chance to talk to the dog’s adopter, and let them know about their new furry friends’ quirks and preferences to help with a smooth transition.
Members of staff involved will often share their insight about how the program affects OC Probation or OC Sheriff’s Dept. staff as well as the participating trainers and their peers within the unit.
A representative from Santiago Canyon College will present the certificates earned by those completing the curriculum endorsed by the California State & the Community College Chancellor’s Office as two continued education courses: Concepts In Dog Training and Practical Dog Training.
At times, a trainer will also address the room, so those in attendance can hear first hand what difference these 14 weeks can make. Here is a recent graduation speech from a trainer at OC Probation who got involved with our programs in 2024:
Hi Everybody,
My name is C. X., and this is only my second set of dogs but these 14 weeks have really taught me a lot.
For example, I have learned patience; something that has been very important as I worked with these dogs. It’s not always easy but I’ve come to understand how important it is to take things step by step. I’ve also learned the value of responsibility and initiative, as me and my peers have had to take charge and make decisions every day, ensuring the dogs are well cared for and on track with their training.
Throughout this experience, I’ve discovered the importance of being nurturing and compassionate. Each dog has its own personality and needs, and I’ve had to adapt my approach to make sure they feel comfortable and loved. But this journey hasn’t been just about the dogs; I’ve grown as a quick learner, constantly absorbing new information and adapting to the challenges along the way.
Another important lesson I’ve learned is to never give up easily. There have been tough moments but I’ve learned to persevere, no matter the obstacles. I’ve also learned to be a team player, collaborating with others to ensure we all succeed in our shared goals.
In addition, this experience has helped me improve my communication skills, whether it’s giving clear instructions or offering support to my fellow peers. I’ve also become more attentive, always keeping a close eye on the dogs to make sure they’re progressing well and staying safe.
Time management has been crucial in balancing all the tasks we’ve had to complete, and I’ve become much more organized as I’ve learned to prioritize deadlines. I’ve had to motivate myself and stay committed, especially when things got challenging, and it has paid off.
Overall, this program has been an incredible journey of growth, and I am grateful for everything it’s taught me. I’m proud of the progress I’ve made, and excited for the next set of dogs. I just want to thank everybody who has made this possible and given me the opportunity to be a part of this program.
We are so proud of both human and canine students!
